Iraq Launches Security Plan for Mid-Shaaban Pilgrimage

The Ministry of Interior announced on Thursday the launch of its special plan for securing the Mid-Shaaban pilgrimage, stressing that instructions have been issued to prevent religious processions from being set up on main streets.

Hawzah News Agency- Spokesperson for the Supreme Security Committee responsible for securing the million-strong pilgrimages at the Ministry of Interior, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, said during a press conference at the Karbala Operations Command headquarters: “We have begun implementing the service, organizational, security, and coordination plan for the Mid-Shaaban pilgrimage, and today we officially announce its launch''.

He explained that the plan consists of three stages. The first stage involved preemptive operations that were prepared well in advance. The second focused on testing and training units on the ground through the implementation of a plan similar to the one currently being executed. The third stage began today and includes full implementation, with the field presence of the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, alongside the supreme security and service committees, which have convened to carry out their duties in the best possible manner.

Miri noted that all units have begun securing the holy city of Karbala, the religious processions, and pilgrims across all Iraqi governorates, in addition to those entering the country through land and air ports, and all activities related to the pilgrimage.

He added that comprehensive intelligence and traffic management plans have been prepared, supported by reinforcements from the Ministry of Defense and the Popular Mobilization Forces, explaining that the security plan includes three main axes and 10 security zones.

He also stated that security agencies will undertake extensive media efforts to counter and monitor rumors. Processions have been instructed not to occupy main streets in order to reduce traffic accidents. He emphasized that there will be no security closures during the pilgrimage and no armed presence in the city, the city center, or near the holy shrines.

Miri concluded by noting that this year’s plan is distinguished by its intelligence-based approach, relying on intelligence measures and the use of 1,600 cameras, including mobile and traffic cameras, to ensure the security of the pilgrimage.
